Zheng He

Zheng He is a highly accomplished computer system engineer with the Energy Efficiency Studies Department at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His career is marked by the successful development and implementation of advanced software systems, often integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions to facilitate energy-efficient technologies and practices.

Zheng, a Chinese-born American, arrived in California without speaking English but quickly overcame the language barrier in high school, developing a strong interest in technology and adopting the American way of life. He earned a degree in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley, specializing in programming and software engineering. Before joining the National Laboratory, Zheng began his career as a full-stack software developer at a startup. There, he quickly gained proficiency in DevOps, maintaining and managing cloud-based applications, and developing on-the-spot problem-solving skills.

Since joining the Laboratory in 2021, Zheng has become a pivotal team member. His deep expertise in software development and system engineering has been crucial to creating several groundbreaking technologies that enhance energy efficiency across various industries. More recently, he has taken the initiative to explore and apply AI solutions to improve productivity. He has been fully involved in developing an AI solution for projects serving the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Vehicle Technologies Office and the California Energy Commission (CEC). Furthermore, his use of AI technologies in performing daily tasks has significantly boosted his individual productivity over the last two years. This commitment to "AI for the energy" and "AI for the research" perfectly aligns with the current mission and goals of the Laboratory.

Beyond his professional work, Zheng maintains a keen interest in technological innovation. He is a dedicated tech enthusiast who engages in hands-on development in his personal time, including Raspberry Pi projects and developing agentic systems. He also enjoys reading, particularly within the science fiction genre.
