Commercial and residential building codes, which are mandated at the Federal level and adopted at the state and sometimes local levels, include provisions related to energy consumption and efficiency. Such codes have become major drivers in the deployment of high-performance appliances and lighting. Yet, tracking or forecasting the effect of these codes can be challenging, as there are dozens of available building codes, and typically they can be updated every few years. As such, producing an accurate picture of U.S. building code requirements requires a robust and on-going data-gathering effort. The EES group does not take part in the development of these building codes, but undertakes significant analysis and forecasting in order to include their effects in other energy-related research.
